Price\, internationally renowned soprano Karen Slack seamlessly blends a historically overlooked musical legacy with present-day artistic excellence.\nThe groundbreaking album features superb recordings of 19 unpublished pieces (including 16 world premiere recordings) by composer Florence B. Price\, considered the first African-American woman to have a composition played by a major orchestra.\nThis event features Price’s music alongside songs by Ravel and Schubert. \nBeyond the Years is in collaboration with ONEcomposer\, an organization dedicated to celebrating composers who have been historically erased. ONEcomposer is inspired by the long-lasting legacy of Florence B. Price.\nThis enchanting event will take listeners on a journey of rediscovery\, reflection\, and reimagination. \nThere will be one intermission. \n

DESCRIPTION:Composer Florence Price made history as the first Black woman to have a symphony performed by a major U.S. orchestra. Minnesota Opera will tell her story in its 51st world premiere\, My Name is Florence\, with music by B.E. Boykin and libretto by Harrison David Rivers. \nWe invite you to experience Florence Price’s story through her own music. Members of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra\, Principal Coach & Chorus Director Celeste Marie Johnson\, and 2nd year Resident Artist mezzo-soprano Kara Morgan will perform chamber and vocal music composed by Price\, who boldly blended her classical music training with the power and vulnerability of spirituals in so much of her work.
