SUMMARY:Sacred Earth
DESCRIPTION:Ragamala Dance Company \nNEW DATE*: Thursday\, April 30 2026 7:30PM\nFriday\, May 1 2026 7:30PM\nLuminary Arts Center \n*Please CLICK HERE for information on the date update.  \nSacred Earth\nBy Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy\n \n\n“Ragamala\, directed by the mother-daughter team of Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy\, is an excellent company. Their devotion to the Bharatanatyam style and to treating that lineage as a living language is always radiantly clear.” — The New York Times \nRagamala Dance Company’s signature work\, Sacred Earth is a powerful\, hour-long journey of movement and music that celebrates the beauty and vitality of the natural world. Performed as a continuous arc of high-energy dance and evocative poetry\, the work unfolds like a living ritual. \nInspired by the ephemerality of the Indian art forms of kolam rice flour drawings\, Warli wall paintings\, and ancient Tamil Sangam poems\, Sacred Earth reflects Artistic Co-Directors Aparna Ramaswamy and Ranee Ramaswamy’s singular vision of the delicate\, interdependent relationship between humanity and nature. The performance becomes an invocation—reminding us that we are not separate from the earth\, but deeply woven into its breath\, rhythms\, and fragile continuance. \n60 minutes\, no intermission \n  \n\n\nThis performance is made possible in part by the Bridge Fund for Dance program through the City of Minneapolis Arts & Cultural Affairs Department\, and by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Biomes
DESCRIPTION:Analog Dance Works presents Biomes\, a contemporary dance production that journeys through tundras\, greenhouses\, fresh waters\, and the vast lands of suburbia to viscerally question our relationships to our natural world. \nThis show is a practice of curiosity\, questioning boundaries\, listening\, and forgiving. It comes from a place of deep emotional currents running below the surface that grapple with how and why we utilize our natural resources recreationally\, economically\, and spiritually. We are searching for pastures where we don’t just coexist with nature\, but merge with our beautifully complex environmental surroundings in unconditionally profound mutualism. \nBiomes brings forth the perspectives of four of its artists: Brenna Mosser\, Sophia Pimsler\, Addie Smith\, and Ruby Smith of RJDT. Each choreographer is working with very different concepts\, but are entwined together around a central question: what is our relationship to the natural environments that we dwell amongst?

SUMMARY:"We Are the River" Film Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the premiere screening of a new PBS documentary film\, “We Are the River: How the Mississippi shaped Minnesota.” The Mississippi River is as complicated as it is captivating – filled with heartbreak and hope – and it begins here. \nFrom her pristine beginnings near Lake Itasca\, the majestic Mississippi winds through Minnesota’s prairies\, valleys and cities\, yet her constant presence is easily taken for granted. To the Dakota\, she is a sacred relative and source of life; to the European settlers\, she was the key to economic prosperity. What do the powerful stories of Native stewards\, early industrialists\, immigrant families and wildlife guardians say about the Mississippi’s future?

SUMMARY:When The Light Finds Me: Seen & Unseen
DESCRIPTION:When The Light Finds Me: Seen & Unseen explores the ever-changing relationship between light\, color\, and perception. Just as light can transform a room\, color can transform a feeling\, and perspective can transform the way we understand what is in front of us. Through movement\, dancers explore the spaces between what is visible and what exists beneath the surface—what catches our eye\, what escapes our notice\, and what changes when we simply choose to look again. Each piece offers a different perspective\, inviting the audience to experience the world through shifting colors\, shadows\, emotions\, and points of view. Ultimately\, the show asks us to consider: What do we see when the light finds us?

SUMMARY:SHRINK / we all need one
DESCRIPTION:SHRINK/we all need one\, an original & witty rock musical about a therapist helping her clients—and herself—navigate the beautiful mess of everyday life. Written by Sophia Pimsler (who’s also a shrink) and set inside a counseling clinic\, clients and their therapist reveal how even the most profound lived experiences challenge the myths surrounding mental health. \nThe rock musical features an original score by Twin Cities musician\, songwriter\, and pioneering transgender rock artist Venus de Mars\, with additional music and lyrics by Sophia Pimsler. SHRINK is a rich theatrical soundscape that weaves storytelling\, ensemble singing\, and dance into an immersive experience. \nBuilding on its successful 2024 premiere\, this new production of SHRINK / we all need one expands and deepens the work with newly created choreography\, an enriched rock musical score\, and refined storytelling\, creating an even more immersive and emotionally resonant theatrical experience. No quick fixes. Just song\, dance\, & bad coffee. \nThe production features a dynamic cast of acclaimed Twin Cities music\, theater\, and dance artists\, including Suzanne Costello\, Brian J. Evans\, Maurice Fields\, Tyler Jay\, Chris Jimmy\, Brenna Mosser\, and Molly Stoltz. \nSHRINK/ we all need one is supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board through the Creative Individuals Art Grant and the Rimon Foundation through Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater. \nUnable to attend but want to still support mental health & the arts? \nAre you in the field of Mental Health? Want to promote your services with our production while supporting the arts? https://givebutter.com/untitled-campaign-dzhaod \nSophia “Sophie” Pimsler (she/her) is a choreographer\, playwright\, performer\, jeweler & shrink. Oy! She realizes that’s a suspicious amount of careers. \nSophia has performed with Contempo Physical Dance (MN)\, April Sellers Dance Collective (MN)\, Analog Dance Works (MN)\, Borealis Dance (MN)\, GloATL (GA)\, Life/Art Dance (CO)\, and Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater (SPDT). She has collaborated with SPDT for many years as a performer\, choreographer\, and project assistant. Her choreography has been commissioned by Threads Dance Project\, SPDT\, Alternative Motion Project\, Borealis Dance Theatre\, Shoot The Glass Theater’s production of Spring Awakening\, PiM Arts High School\, and The Phipps Center for the Arts (WI). \nA practicing mental health therapist with more than a decade of clinical experience\, Pimsler holds an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Graduate Certificate in Sex Therapy. She is a therapist and clinical supervisor at Therapist Cooperative Practice and presents continuing education courses. \nWhen she’s not in a rehearsal studio or therapy office\, she’s probably making jewelry. As the owner of MerMade Jewelry\, Sophia has turned her obsession with mermaids into a socially acceptable career. Follow @mermadeinmn. \nVenus de Mars (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist\, musician\, songwriter\, and frontwoman of the pioneering Minneapolis glam-punk transgender rock band Venus de Mars & All the Pretty Horses. She is also the subject of the acclaimed documentary Venus of Mars\, which chronicles her life\, artistry\, and journey as a transgender musician. \nVenus came out as transgender in 1988\, at a time when openly embracing her identity meant confronting profound societal stigma and exclusion. Rather than living in the shadows\, she forged her own artistic path\, creating work that celebrates individuality while challenging expectations. She is currently writing a memoir reflecting on her decades-long journey as a transgender artist and her place in today’s rapidly evolving cultural landscape\, where visibility\, acceptance\, and backlash continue to coexist. \n \nDuration: 2hrs with one intermission.\nIf you are unable to make your performance\, contact the box office to exchange your tickets to another performance. \nIf cost is a barrier\, please email shrinkpimsler@gmail.com. Limited complimentary tickets are available to the community\, as our commitment to making art accessible. \nSHRINK addresses topics of abuse\, racial violence and includes brief discussions of sex. The performance also contains strong language. We trust caretakers to make the best choice and no one will be turned away. \nOur matinee performances offer $10+ community pricing\, making the show more accessible to anyone who wants to experience it. Choose what you’re able to pay\, with a $10 minimum. \n

Set against the tragic backdrop of 15th-century Paris\, this dark romance explores themes of compassion\, prejudice\, heroism\, and virtue. \nThis immersive presentation brings new life to a beloved story\, combining the power of orchestral performance with the magic of cinema. \nShorey has built an international reputation for reimagining classic silent films for modern audiences. His productions have headlined major music festivals and sold-out concert halls throughout Europe and the United States. This Halloween marks his return to Minneapolis for the world premiere of his latest original work: THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. \nAudience Attire: Guests are encouraged to embrace the spirit of the evening by dressing in their favorite Renaissance-inspired costume attire. \nParking: Convenient event parking is available directly across the street from the venue for $6\, making for an easy and enjoyable night out in Minneapolis’s vibrant North Loop district. Street parking is also free after 6pm.

SUMMARY:time signature
DESCRIPTION:time signature\, presented by University Dance Theatre\, brings together three distinctive choreographic voices in a dynamic concert performed by Dance students and directed by Laura Selle Virtucio. The program features a 30-minute restaging of Bill T. Jones’ Story/Time\, reimagined by members of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company and Assistant Professor Carlo Antonio Villanueva; a new work by Marjani Forté-Saunders; and new choreography by Professor Ananya Chatterjea. \nInspired by the musical meaning of “time signature”—the rhythm and meter that shape a musical movement—the title also speaks to the distinct imprint each choreographer makes in time. Together\, these works create a conversation across generations\, artistic practices\, and perspectives\, brought to life by the individual and collective voices of the performers.

SUMMARY:Under Midwestern Skies: Argento & His Students
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Opera continues to celebrate the music of Dominick Argento at the centenary of his birth and his legacy both as a co-founder of the Center Opera Company in 1963\, now known as Minnesota Opera\, and educator for the next generation of composers. \nA prolific composer in his own right\, Argento’s musical influence extends beyond his own works to those of his students\, many of whom also chose to make Minnesota their home. Led by Chorus Director Celeste Marie Johnson\, the Minnesota Opera Chorus celebrates their compositions alongside Argento’s\, featuring music by Libby Larsen\, David Evan Thomas\, Juliana Hall\, and Stephen Paulus. Many of the poets on the program are also native Minnesotans\, and their words help paint the landscape that holds a unique place in these composers’ hearts. \nGenerously sponsored in part by Gale Sharpe in gratitude for Vern Sutton who sang Dominick’s notes so beautifully.
